We’ve all heard rumors circulating about a so called “Superclub” that was ready to be built in Harrisburg. This Superclub was going to dwarf 2nd Street’s largest clubs in every way and school Central Pennsylvanians in clubbing “Miami style”.

Cameron St SiteWell, I just got done reading a local real esate blog and it mentions a large office project called Capitol View Commerce Center.

Now I was under the assumption that the Superclub project was to be located on Cameron St and be comprised of mainly new construction. This would leave the vacant area 2 blocks north of Appalachian Brewing Company one of the primary locations for such a monumental project.

With rumors circulating that the Superclub may not be happening after all, could it be safe to say high-end nighttime entertainment was scrapped for class-A office space?

Wow, now this is a bummer. I was wondering if anything was going to happen. I heard a rumor months ago! That is really upsetting. DTH needs more clubs, not these little crappy, sappy bars!

DT has been on a tangent since 2003-ish. We hit the ground running; DT was on FIRE from ‘01 to mid-’03! Then we stumbled. Innovation gave way to repetition. Creativity yielded to security-blanket management. Don’t get me wrong; we’re still better off than most cities our size. But why are we where we’re at now; why aren’t we further? Why are we growing at a snail’s pace?

I caught this in The Patriot today:

Printer breaks ground for plant

There had been talk that a nightclub might be considered for part of the building. Dodd said “that was purely a tenant approaching us about a potential development. We’ll talk to pretty much anybody who’s interested” in the site.

And also in the article, it says:

“Dodd said the building will have 100,000 square feet for additional tenants that could range from call centers to manufacturing, distribution or research and development operations.”

Seeing as this is the type of tenants they wish to attract, I’d say it is a very safe bet the Superclub is no more…

The recent comments about the frat party scene, drop in downtown attendance, complaints about $5 parking and $6 drinks together with the rise in crime, muggings and shootings and the decline in confidence by local banks and private investors could be reasons why the club could go somewhere else, maybe even the West Shore. While the developer has secured grants and funds for the recycling plant and offices, has he been able to secure the funds to start the construction for the club? Confidence in this town is at an all time low. The club owners have had meetings with 3 other developers, one of which is local and one in the State College area. Don’t know about the other one. Could this mean that someone may have stolen them away from Mayor Reed and Harrisburg and are laughing all the way to the bank. Could the Frost guys have seized the opportunity to lure them to State College knowing that people in our town could not afford the gas to drive to State College every weekend and knowing that there are more than 6000 people partying Thursday through Sunday.
Also the comments about superclubs dying by someone on the forum was indicative of the ignorance level in this area. Superclubs (Space, Privilege and Pacha) in Ibiza have been around since 1978 and are still going strong, superclubs such as Avalon, Space(Miami), Mansion and Crowbar still attract huge crowds. The superclub owners are not here to teach people about superclubs. They expect people to at least know their facts about superclubs. If the club chooses another location other than Harrisburg, we only have ourselves to blame. They thought Harrisburg was ready, we have proved we are not. What support have we given? I have written to the Mayor showing my support for a real nightclub but how many others have done the same thing? Have we shown any interest at all? All we managed to do was drive them away by showing we are not ready to step out of our small town image and become real city folk. Our bar owners have done nothing to enhance our image either. Their comments in the press were ridiculous. Open mouth and insert both feet. All we can do is hope that they change their minds.

Something to say?
