I recently paid a visit to a new, but old familiar place. Appalachian Brewing Company opened within the last few weeks at the former Kokomo’s location on Market St in Camp Hill. The former sports bar turned brewery was a comfortable visit. I easily recognized the general shape that it once was, but was pleasantly surprised to see the renovations transform an old hangout into a refined brewpub.

The large wooden bar at ABC Camp Hill is reminscent of the original brewery in HarrisburgThe center bar and walls which were part of the former Kokomo’s have been removed to open up the room. The bar area and seating were arranged to resemble the original Harrisburg ABC location. The same wood bar, draft handles, and their own mug club, stretch along the back wall next to the kitchen. The bar area fills up the room and shares space with a number of casual high tables. A small brewing area is set up adjacent to the entrance. World flags hang from the ceiling and create a sense of space within the pub section.

A dining area remains where the original was, laid out with booths and tables. The separation from the bar area is definitive and lends a quieter atmosphere for dining. There are no televisions to distract diners in this area. In fact, the sports bar atmosphere that once was is very played down, with only three flat panel televisions strategically placed over the bar.

All the same Appalachian beers are served here along with most of the Belgian beers served in the Abbey Bar upstairs at Harrisburg. Additionally, a unique wine tap system serves up reds and whites by the glass.

The dining room is cozy and feels almost like an art gallery. For a restaurant that has only been officially open for a week or so, the service was outstanding. The bartenders were attentive and the food was served in an appropriate time frame. This isn’t the kind of restaurant you need to wait “until they get the kinks out”.

The Camp Hill location is so far a hit for the West Shore crowd who are sometimes too lazy to cross the river. At 8pm on a Thursday, they were already doing a brisk business. Don’t let the crowded parking lot fool you because there was still room at the bar and in the dining room to eat. Although I did hear there was up to a 40-minute wait during opening weekend.

As the ABC brand expands to it’s third location after Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, I am looking forward to visiting the planned locations for Lancaster as well as Leesburg, VA.

They opened the Camp Hill location jus for the LAZY Camp Hiller’s that don’t want to cross the river. Thank Goodness, cuz we don’t want them at the original location anyway :)
