Pennsylvania is close to joining the short list of states that have gone completely smoke-freeWhile Pennsylvanians wait for the state house to pass a non-smoking bill, many restaurants, and some bars, are starting hop on board a little early.

As an ex-smoker, I sincerely support this move restaurateurs are making. I would much rather see businesses in the dining and hospitality industry follow the trend and public support rather than have governmental policy make that decision for them.

There are plenty of non-smoking restaurants downtown to choose from. Many new restaurants are starting to open as non-smoking such as El Sol. Cafe Fresco has always been non-smoking since their opening a few years ago. The Brewhouse Grille, I’m told, will become non-smoking as soon as their deck opens next month. Their setup will allow the smokers to go outside, and the bar and dining room will become smoke-free. This is a great trend for non-smokers.

I’ve recently decided to update the list of links on the left hand side of this site with non-smoking icons to designate non-smoking restaurants. Sara just let me know of 405 Jazz being a non-smoking room. If you know of any more, please add them to the comments and I’ll try to update them.

FYI, I’m still waiting for the first smoke-free nightclub to open downtown…

For the record, I hate these damn security codes. I NEVER get them right the first time, and my comments are lost in cyberspace. Fortunately, this was a short one …

The first nonsmoking martini bar IS in the works, from what I hear … :)

Also, the trend I’ve noticed recently is that some restaurants (Scott’s, Firehouse), while they continue to permit smoking at the bar, no longer offer smoking dining sections. In both of these cases, the bars are set away from the dining areas. They’re not enclosed, however, and as a smoker-when-I-drink, I’m less sensitive to the issue overall.

Don’t forget to mark on the left:
Bricco
Golden Sheaf
Mangia Qui
Neato Burrito
Passage to India
Sammy’s
Sophia
Suba

Sara, I know the feeling and you may need to start doing what I do: before I punch in the security code and hit submit I copy what I wrote. That way if it doesn’t go through, all I have to do is paste it and try again…and again…and again…

Anyway, I support this movement wholeheartedly. We have a smoking ban here in Philly and it’s GREAT! To be able to go out at night and come home not reeking of smoke is pure heaven! Yes, it is definitely a smoker’s right to smoke. But it’s my right to be able to breathe too, so…

Thanks for the list. It’s a great resource. What Harrisburg restaurants needs, besides non-smoking laws, are more rooftop decks :)

The list of restaurants has been updated on the left with their respective non-smoking icons.

Also, I have updated the captcha to something a little easier to use and read. You’ll no longer have to worry about trying to figure out if that is a 1 or a lower case l.

As always if you have any problems with the site or inaccurate content, please let me know!

Yay!
Thanks - I’m a complete retard about these things - ask Dave.

Love the icons - great add.

The Roxy on 3rd and North is non-smoking . . . not a high classed dinner restaurant, but regular food prepared well, and a kick ass breakfast spot.

Thanks for the list of non-smoking restaurants. I have another one to add to your list, McGrath’s Emerald Grill located at the Capital City Mall. In addition to its being non-smoking, it is a great restaurant and bar. The decor is beautiful and the food is great…it’s become one of my favorite spots!

Shawn - are you sure about McGrath’s Emerald Grille? When I was there a month or so ago, while the dining area was nonsmoking, smoking was permitted in the bar area. Did that change?

I agree with what you’re saying. I have put together a challenge to the hospitality industry to join the growing smoke-free trend & prohibit smoking in all workplaces, including restaurants, bars, hotels and casinos, both indoors and outdoors. Check out these videos they will make you laugh:
