After reading about all the hype this weekend, I decided to check out the well publicized, highly reviewed, Nonna’s Delisioso in Midtown. This is not to be confused with the Nonna’s in New Cumberland, in fact, they’re not related at all.

More photos after the jump…

As Jersey Mike described in his interview with the owners, think more along the lines of an upscale New Jersey style deli. The sandwiches were out of this world and the bread and mozzarella were all fresh. It was probably the best sandwich I’ve had in a while. With the new HACC campus lined up in this area of the city, this place will become very popular at lunchtime. Also look for more talk from Sara, and the Go! blog says there should be something from Sue next week. No website yet, but I did find a menu here.

starbucks.jpgFor all of you waiting for a real coffeeshop to open downtown, your wish may have partially come true. Starbucks now has a larger footprint across from the Whitaker Center. It’s more than just the tiny coffeeshop inside the corridor between Strawberry Square and the Hilton. The Starbucks cafe isn’t exactly a Cornerstone variety complete with poetry readings and acoustic open mic nights, but it is a full blown coffeeshop in a downtown location.

And not really reopening, but relaunching is entertainment publication, MODE Magazine. It’s nice to see the familiar Harrisburg rag again, but are more people going to care than the 20 people on the front cover? Didn’t anyone tell these guys the last time they shut their doors that print is dead? Either way I’d rather read the local MODE than the Lancaster based Fly any day. Welcome back.

Actually, my band the Love Haters just played a Starbucks corporate event down in York this past Monday and one of the regional managers told me about this very Starbucks that’s going in across from Whitaker Center. She said it’s super nice inside and, YES, they ARE planning poetry readings and some acoustic music!

It actually looked very nice inside when I walked by. Thanks for the info Trent and there you have it - a real coffeeshop downtown with entertainment!

I ate there today and the food is great! It’s about time we get a really good hoagie shop in midtown!

[…] Here’s Jersey’s Mike’s interview with Nonna’s Deli owner Raymond Diaz and here’s Bone on Nonna’s sandwiches. […]
