SOMA Becomes Official

The new Starbucks on 3rd and Market shows the beginning of the downtown improvements for SOMA. After months of quietly referring to the area between Chestnut and Market as “SoMa”, the name has finally stuck according to a recent article in the Central Penn Business Journal.

Harristown Development Corp, the people behind Strawberry Square, Bricco, and International House are going to put forth a branding campaign in this district in order to attract both business and more foot traffic.

SoMa, or SOMA stands for “South of Market [St]” and will initially encompass a four block area between Market and Chestnut Streets and South Third and Fourth Streets. It was inspired by a trip to San Francisco which also has a district called SOMA complete with unique restaurants and nightlife.

Harrisburg’s SOMA district includes upscale restaurants such as Bricco and El Sol, and also the new bar Tara Station which opened earlier this year. I would go so far as to loosely include the new Starbucks in this region as well.

Harristown Development and it’s affiliates plan to add “brick-accented walkways and historic streetlights” in addtion to “SOMA banners along South Third, Chestnut, Dewberry and Blackberry streets.”

As I had mentioned in a previous post, it’s nice to see an alternative to “Restaurant Row” develop downtown.
