Mars Lounge is now openSmalls has officially switched back to Mars Lounge. I didn’t have the opportunity to get out to their soft opening last Thursday, but hope to check it out in the upcoming weeks.

I was there on Friday night. They have a pretty cool digital wall across from the bar, with mirrors behind the bar that reflect the image and make for a “trippy” experience. Music is straight up hip-hop even after I tried to get a few requests in for house. The rest of the place is pretty boring. Bathrooms were clean but the floor was already very sticky.

So they did return to the music format they left with? I just don’t think we need more hip hop downtown. I’m ok with the genre, I think that room is too small. House is where it’s at and it’s a “lounge”.

Hip Hop huh? So what’s the over/under on shots fired/people hurt by the end of summer?

First, let me say I was both excited and disappointed to hear Mars was to return. I was a regular there from its original conception until its subsequent fall-off. Some of my fondest downtown memories involve Mars. It’s sad to know it has been reincarnated by the Kamionka monopoly.

Secondly, the music was always one of the biggest attractions. From Geoffro’s acid-jazz experimentation, to Ill Cosby’s eclectic selections, it was always an alternative to the radio-friendly fair on the rest of 2nd street. Keep in mind, Hip Hop was ALWAYS a part of the mix. ALWAYS. House belongs in clubs. The post involving shootings/people hurt is EXTREMELLY ignorant to associate a type of music with behavior. Let’s go burn some books while you’re at it.

bazooka! get at me!

i have to agree, hip-hop was always a staple at mars from day one. the vintage mars lounge soundtrack was excellent (and, with jp involved, i’m sure is still excellent), but lounge was not part of the weekend grind. i don’t think a devoted house night was introduced to mars until 2003 or so, and it didn’t last long (i was there on the second of three weeks of the abrupt shift to tech-house on saturdays). outside of a very core audience, harrisburg has never been very big on house.

don’t bet on shootings at mars just because of hip-hop.

Again i left on the konnich’ thread and ill leave bread crumbs here as well. EDM is still the staple for a few clubs downtown even tho the shift to hip hop was of course made the lower level still religiously pumps EDM some mainstream most tracks not even found on satellite radio. Their dj Kaelum does a fantastic job of scouring for unheard and or limited release tracks. He’s made some awesome compiliation tracks that you can pick up when at the bar. If you haven’t been there yet or in a while give it a chance you will probably see my eastern European group of friends in the booth.

I found the drinks weak and the music overpowering. Even were I fan of rap, the level pushed out by the speakers made any sort of communications other than a shout for a drink impossible. The plastic seats were uncomfortable (I noticed most people were standing rather than sit in them) and the low light was at a level neither dark nor well lit so that after a while I got a headache. The prices weren’t bad, but overall unless one is an adamant fan of standing and deafening music, I’d avoid this place.

Something to say?
