Harrisburg’s latest addition to its SoMa district is not only a sylish, upscale restaurant, but it’s also a classroom. [tag]Bricco[/tag], located on 3rd and Chestnut St is an extension of the Olewine School of Culinary arts at Harrisburg Area Community College.
Bricco is a modern, Tuscan themed restaurant and bar specializing in Mediterranean cuisine. Local ingredients are used in much of the cooking, and staples such as cheeses and pastas are made fresh on site. An open kitchen allows the patrons to see the action and a 4 seat chef’s table allows small groups to receive extra special attention from the chefs.
Menu items range from Beef short ribs ($18) to Roasted Lamb ($28) and pasta dishes such as Rigatoni ($15) to Squid Ink Linguine ($19). Half portions are available for pasta and a risotto of the day is always advertised. A brick oven serves up Bricco’s signature wild mushoom pizza with caramelized onions and white truffle oil. A full raw bar with a variety of shellfish is visible behind the bar as patrons walk inside the restaurant.
There are two main seating areas on either end of the bar each with their own atmosphere. A private dining area for about 24 people is also available. A large wine list of over 200 varieties is available and prices are only $10 above retail.
General Manager, Tony Salomone, says there are 40 students using the restaurant as a working classroom for the semester. Those students will then continue on to the next semester while another group will begin the initial training. The entire program lasts 4 semesters with students rotating roles during daytime and nighttime shifts. A full time wait staff is also employed to support the students.
